Coenzyme Q10: A Conditionally Essential Nutrient
Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is critically involved in metabolism. Humans synthesize some CoQ10 and obtain some from food. However, aging and suboptimal metabolic conditions can reduce synthesis and the ability to absorb CoQ10. In various states of health, CoQ10 supplementation is prudent, if not necessary.*
What is CoQ10?
CoQ10 is chemically related to vitamins E and K. It is called ubiquinone (Q) because it is widely distributed in nature. CoQ10 is synthesized in all cells for energy production, and serves as an antioxidant in membranes. Its role in energy production holds special importance for the heart and brain. These, and certain muscle tissues, are spectacularly endowed with mitochondria (subcellular furnaces), where CoQ10 promotes fat and carbohydrate breakdown to produce more than 90 percent of our energy. CoQ10 facilitates electron transfer within mitochondrial membranes to produce ATP, the body's energy currency.*
CoQ10 is also present in cell membranes to maintain fluidity for proper performance of membrane receptors, carriers and enzymes. It is involved in kidney function, periodontal (gum) health, blood sugar regulation, cognitive functioning, and may help regulate body weight.* CoQ10 also plays a role in blood pressure regulation.*
The Added Benefits of Q-absorb
Most CoQ10 supplements are poorly absorbed. However, Jarrow Formulas Q-absorb technology improved absorption up to 493 percent over baseline in humans, and kept absorption levels beyond 400 percent after 30 days. Q-absorb employs a natural pro-liposome delivery system clinically shown to increase CoQ10 levels, outperform dry CoQ10 capsules, and reduce the time required to see effects. By reducing the CoQ10 required to raise blood concentration, Q-absorb improves mitochondrial function and anti-oxidant activity.*
Antioxidant Effects of CoQ10
Aging is accelerated by free radicals which cause cellular damage and weaken immunity. Free radicals steal electrons from other molecules. This process--known as oxidation--promotes deterioration of mitochondria and other tissues. Damaged tissues are deemed foreign, and attacked by the immune system. As oxidative damage increases with age, the immune system and other organs and systems in the body can benefit from additional antioxidant support to maintain optimal function.*
CoQ10's powerful antioxidant action can be as effective as vitamin E in decreasing free radicals.* Alpha-tocopherol, one common form of vitamin E, taken alone can make serum LDL more prone to oxidation. Co-supplementation with CoQ10 promotes healthy vitamin E activity and LDL structure.* Indeed, alpha-tocopherol alone reduces CoQ10 levels, indicating that CoQ10 regenerates the vitamin E, as well as vitamin C. Thus, CoQ10 supplementation may be required to optimize the antioxidant benefits of vitamin E.*
CoQ10 and the Heart
CoQ10 can improve many cardiac parameters, and some progressive doctors use it to improve cardiac function.* Millions of people around the world take CoQ10 every day for cardiovascular support, but only a small percentage of these are Americans. Perhaps this is because in the U.S. CoQ10 is regulated as a dietary supplement. However, U.S. physicians are increasingly recommending it to their patients due to growing clinical evidence of its benefits.*
Many more Americans take statin medications. Cholesterol-lowering drugs inhibit an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. However, this inhibition also blocks CoQ10 synthesis, and can reduce CoQ10 production nearly twice as much as that of LDL cholesterol. CoQ10 levels can also drop significantly in women with pre-eclampsia, compared to normal pregnant women. Knowledgeable physicians are aware of CoQ10 benefits and recommend accordingly.
Jarrow Formulas actively supports CoQ10 cardiovascular research. Q-absorb was shown to improve endothelial (blood vessel wall) function in subjects with sub-optimal heart function, including improved arterial dilation and increased peak VO2 (volume of oxygen consumed).* Q-absorb plus a regular exercise regimen resulted in the greatest gains, with endothelial dysfunction nearly normalized, while protecting muscles.* Q-absorb (100 mg Q) given at each meal showed improved heart function, enhanced vasodilation, increased extracellular SOD concentration and tripled plasma CoQ10 levels.*
