Niacin is one of Vitamin B3 forms. It is also called nicotinic acid. The other form of Vitamin B3 is called niacinamide. Niacin plays an important role in many aspects of energy metabolism and nervous system function. It is involved in the function of many enzymes of a wide range of body processes, which include the release of energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins. The Daily Value of niacin is 20mg. Yet many clinic trials prove that at higher dose, typically in the range of 250-2000mg/day, niacin can lower cholesterol level, thus benefits cardiovascular system. Dosing use usually is started at the low-end (250mg/day) with increasing dose of 250mg each one or two weeks till 1000-2000mg/day. Note: when higher dose (above 100mg/day) of niacin is used for lowering cholesterol level, niacin may cause flushing, itching, rush of the skin as well as headaches and hypotension.
